Indeed, and as I am learning from Huang, there are different ways to look at and study the Shang Han Lun.

I'm particularly interested in looking at some of the writing by Xu Da-Chun (徐大椿), who Dr Huang says had a big influence his thinking.

Michael,
I just wanted to comment that perhaps we should say that the Shang Han Lun is primarily an herbal text, not just limited to herbal medicine. There are moxabustion and acupuncture treatments and contraindications scattered through the text, and even some dietary recommendations (having congee after gui zhi tang, as you mentioned). We also must remember that the six channel model of disease progression originated in the Ling Shu, even though Zhong Zhong-jing modified that model into something quite original.

Not only would gui zhi tang be great for folks that get lost in the woods, the Shang Han Lun is worth several lifetimes of study. . .
